Americana Lock by Andre Galvao · BJJ Fanatics · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. When their far arm is bent and up near their head, pin their wrist to the mat with your near hand.
  2. Thread your other hand under their arm and grab your own wrist (figure-four).
  3. Keep their elbow at 90°, close to their head.
  4. Slide their hand along the mat toward their hip while lifting their elbow. Slow.

Details that make it work

  • Their wrist stays on the mat the whole time, like painting a line.
  • Chest pressure stops them turning into you.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting their hand off the mat.
  • Their elbow bent less than 90°.

Drill it
