White to Blue belt

Learn to survive, escape and understand the positions. A blue belt can't easily be held down or submitted by beginners, knows what they want in every position, and has a few moves that work in live rolls.

Typically 1.5–3 years of steady training; often closer to 3 at 2 sessions a week.

What coaches look for

  • Escape mount, side control and the back against a same-size white belt going hard
  • Survive rounds with higher belts without getting tapped every time
  • Know every position on the flow map and your goal in each
  • Pass the guard one reliable way and hold side control
  • Sweep or come up from half guard against resistance
  • Finish 2–3 submissions in live rolls
  • Defend leg locks safely: hide the heel, clear the knee line, tap early
  • Train consistently and be a safe, controlled partner

How to get there faster

  • Defense first: survival is what coaches look at most
  • Pick one game plan and run it every roll for a month
  • Log every session so your weak spots show up
  • Ask your coach directly what they want to see from you
