Step by step

  1. Defend the choke first: chin down, both hands on the choking (over) arm, pull it off your neck.
  2. Scoot your hips and slide your shoulders to the mat on the side of their choking arm.
  3. Pin their bottom leg and push the hook off your hip with your hand or foot.
  4. Get your back flat on the mat and turn in toward them.
  5. Come up in their half guard or guard, or on top.

Details that make it work

  • Hands first, then hips. If your hands aren't defending, you get choked.
  • Going to the choking-arm side means they can't easily climb to mount.

Common mistakes

  • Escaping toward their under-arm side.
  • Grabbing their hand and pulling straight down.
