Body triangle escape from the back
How to escape back control when they lock a body triangle: neck first, then break the lock at the foot and turn in. Use it when their legs are locked around your waist from the back.
Step by step
- Defend the choke first: chin down, both hands on the choking arm. Nothing else matters until your neck is safe.
- Find the lock: one of their legs crosses your belly and its foot is tucked behind their other knee.
- Keep one hand on the choking arm. With the other hand, or your free heel, push their tucked foot out from behind their knee.
- Slide your shoulders to the mat on the side of their choking arm as the lock loosens.
- Get your back flat on the mat, turn in toward them and come up in their half guard or on top.
- Tap if the choke gets under your chin, or the squeeze on your ribs stops you breathing.
Details that make it work
- Neck first, legs second. People get choked while fighting the triangle.
- Break the lock at the foot. That's where it's weakest.
Common mistakes
- Both hands on their legs while their choking arm is free.
- Trying to push the whole leg off your belly.
