Body lock pass defense
How to stop the body lock pass: frame and hip escape before their lock settles, then re-guard. Use it whenever they close the distance to hug your hips.
Step by step
- Prevent it: keep your feet on their hips and your knees between you. The body lock needs their chest close.
- If they close in, frame on their shoulders or collarbones before their hands lock behind your back.
- Hip escape away from the side they're stepping to, to make space for a knee.
- Slide a knee back inside and re-guard: feet on hips, or butterfly hooks.
- If they trap one leg, lock half guard on it and get your knee shield and underhook.
Details that make it work
- Early beats strong. Once the lock settles, it's very hard to move.
- Frames first, then the hips move.
Common mistakes
- Lying flat and hugging them back.
- Pushing with straight arms one at a time.
Drill it
Partner hunts the body lock at 50%: 3 × 1 min. Reset when they settle or you re-guard.
If it fails, or what comes next
