Body lock pass

You lock your hands around their hips and walk past their legs while staying chest to chest. It's strong against butterfly and seated guard because it stops their hips moving.

Passing Side control

5 Stages of The Body Lock Pass by Lachlan Giles · BJJ Fanatics · YouTube

Step by step

  1. Close the distance into their butterfly or seated guard and lock your hands around their waist, low near the hips.
  2. Drive your shoulder into their chest and pin their hips.
  3. Step one leg back and to the outside, then step or slide it past their leg.
  4. Free your trapped leg (walk your hips out, or strip their legs with your foot).
  5. Release the lock and switch to crossface and underhook.

Details that make it work

  • Glue your chest to theirs. Space helps them.
  • Head on their chest, looking the way you're passing.

Common mistakes

  • Locking around their chest instead of their hips.
  • Standing too tall.
