Curriculum
Blue to Purple belt
Build systems. A purple belt has a guard that threatens sweeps and submissions off the same grips, passes in chains, attacks the back as a system, and starts to set the pace in rolls. Many purple belts start helping teach the basics.
Typically about 2 years at blue belt. IBJJF minimum: 2 years at blue.
What coaches look for
- Your guard is hard to pass and attacks with sweeps and submissions together
- You pass with at least two linked options
- You take the back from three or more positions and finish from it
- You enter and finish a straight ankle lock and defend heel hooks calmly
- You hold dominant positions against blue belts going hard
- You can explain and teach the white-belt fundamentals
How to get there faster
- Specialize: build one guard deeply (butterfly/X/SLX, or half guard)
- Do positional rounds from your worst positions every week
- Compete a few times if you can; it shows your gaps quickly
- Film some of your rolls and watch them back
