Duck-under to the back

You lift their elbow and slip under their arm to get behind them. Use it when they push into you from a collar tie or reach for your neck.

Standing Back control

Step by step

  1. From a collar tie, let them push their forearm into you or grab your neck.
  2. Push their elbow up with your same-side hand.
  3. Change levels and duck your head under their armpit as you step your near foot deep, past their hip.
  4. Come up behind them and lock your hands around their waist.
  5. Drop your hips, step behind their heel and bring them down to the mat, landing behind them.
  6. Insert your hooks and settle in back control.

Details that make it work

  • Lift the elbow and duck in the same moment.
  • Step deep. A short step leaves you in front of them with your head exposed.

Common mistakes

  • Ducking without changing levels.
  • Lifting and dropping them. Bring them down with a mat return, never a slam.

Drill it
