Curriculum
Purple to Brown belt
Chains, counters and pressure. A brown belt sees attacks two moves ahead, counters the counters, and controls stronger people with position and timing. Where your rules allow it, the leg-lock game is complete.
Typically 1.5–2 years at purple. IBJJF minimum: 1.5 years at purple, age 18+.
What coaches look for
- You link attacks across positions without resetting
- You counter the common counters to your own moves
- You have a complete leg-lock system: entries, control, finishes and counters
- You pressure pass and pin higher-level partners
- Purple belts rarely submit you
- You coach during rolls and fix other people's details
How to get there faster
- Train specific problems, not just open rolls
- Drill the counters to your favorite moves
- Teach regularly; it shows what you don't understand yet
- Study high-level competition footage of your positions
