A front choke around their neck from your guard. Use it when their head drops in front of you, such as when they reach in or after a hip bump.

Step by step

  1. When their head drops (they reach in, or after a hip bump), wrap their neck: forearm under the chin, blade of the wrist into the throat.
  2. Grip your hands together (palm to palm, or your wrist).
  3. Close your guard high or put a foot on their hip.
  4. Pull their head down and arch your hips up and back, lifting your forearm into the throat (high elbow).

Details that make it work

  • The choke comes from your hips and your forearm lifting, not from squeezing with your arms.
  • Arm-in (one of their arms inside the choke) is often tighter in no-gi.

Common mistakes

  • Choking the jaw instead of the throat.
  • Lying flat and squeezing with your arms only.
