How to Take the Back from Side Control Using the Kimura, with Brandon Mullins! · Stephan Kesting · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. From side control, when they turn away to turtle, catch their near wrist with your far hand.
  2. Reach your other arm over their back, under their near arm, and grab your own wrist: a figure-four kimura grip.
  3. Keep their elbow pulled tight to your chest. Their arm is bent behind them, so they can't post or base on it.
  4. Put your near foot in as a hook inside their near thigh.
  5. Sit to your near hip and roll back, using the kimura grip to pull them on top of you.
  6. Swap the kimura grip for a seatbelt and add your second hook.

Details that make it work

  • The kimura grip is for control here. Keep their elbow tight and the shoulder stays quiet.
  • Roll them over your body, not away from you.

Common mistakes

  • Cranking the shoulder instead of using the grip to steer.
  • Letting their elbow come off your chest, which frees the arm.
