Kipping (heel-drag) mount escape

A mount escape that lifts their weight with a hip kip, then drags your heel back under their leg to half guard. Use it when they sit low in mount and the elbow-knee is stuck.

Mounted Half guard

Step by step

  1. Frame both hands on their hips. Keep your elbows close to your body.
  2. Kip: bring your knees toward your chest and lift your hips, pushing on their hips to slide them up your body.
  3. Drop your hips back to the mat. They land lighter, with space between your hips and their knees.
  4. Turn to your side and push their knee down toward your feet with your top hand or elbow.
  5. Drag your bottom heel along the mat and back under their leg, bringing your knee inside.
  6. Lock half guard, then recover full guard or come up on the underhook.

Details that make it work

  • The kip makes the space; the heel drag uses it. Do them as one movement.
  • Frames on the hips, not the chest.

Common mistakes

  • Kipping with no frames, so they just ride it.
  • Pushing their chest with straight arms (armbar).

Drill it

Solo: 10 kips with a heel drag each side. Partner in low mount at 50%: 10 escapes.
