Lockdown half guard and old-school sweep

You lock their trapped leg and stretch it, then grab the ankle and drive them over. Use it when they flatten you in half guard and you need to stop their pressure first.

Step by step

  1. From half guard, lock your legs around their trapped leg: your outside leg hooks around their ankle from the outside, your inside foot hooks over that ankle.
  2. Extend your legs (the whip-up) to stretch their trapped leg back. This kills their base.
  3. Turn to your side and get the underhook on the side of the trapped leg.
  4. Reach your other hand down and grab the ankle of their trapped leg.
  5. Release the lockdown, come up on your knee, and drive your head into their chest while you pull the ankle. They can't post that leg and fall over.
  6. Come up on top in half guard and start passing.

Details that make it work

  • Whip up before you look for the underhook. A stretched leg can't post.
  • Hold the ankle until they are flat.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the lockdown and doing nothing with it.
  • Driving straight up instead of into them.

Drill it

10 whip-ups to underhook, then 10 old-school sweeps each side.
