Reverse De La Riva sweep and back exposure

You hook their lead leg from the inside and kick their knee out while blocking the far ankle. Use it when they knee-cut into your guard or step a leg between yours.

Step by step

  1. When they step a lead leg between your legs, thread your near leg inside it, behind their knee, with your foot on the outside of their thigh.
  2. Hold their lead ankle with the hand on that side. Reach your free hand to their far ankle.
  3. Put your free foot on their far hip or thigh.
  4. Sweep: hold the far ankle, push the far hip, and extend your hook to drive their lead knee forward and out. They fall to their seat.
  5. Follow them up: come up on your knees on top and start passing.
  6. If they pull the far leg back to post, keep the hook, swing your hips under them toward their back, catch their waist, and come up behind them.

Details that make it work

  • The hook sits behind their knee, not on the shin.
  • Block the far ankle before you push. If they can step, they won't fall.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing with the hook while their far leg is free to step back.
  • Letting go of the lead ankle as they fall, so they recover guard.

Drill it

10 sweeps each side, then 5 reps of the back exposure when your partner steps back.
