Knee cut (knee slice) pass
You slide your knee across their thigh to pass to side control. It's the most common pass in no-gi and works against both half guard and open guard.
Step by step
- Control their near knee: pin it to the mat or hold it.
- Get an underhook on their far arm, or crossface (your shoulder into their jaw).
- Slide your knee across their thigh to the mat on the far side.
- Keep your back leg wide for base and your chest heavy on theirs.
- Pull your trailing leg free and settle in side control.
Details that make it work
- Underhook first. Without it they turn in and recover half guard.
- Keep your head low, on the far side of theirs.
Common mistakes
- Slicing while sitting upright.
- Leaving your foot trapped between their legs.
Drill it
10 passes each side, each ending in a 3-second side control hold.
