A head-and-arm choke from under side control, finished by folding into a ball. Use it when the top player keeps their head on your near side instead of crossfacing.

Step by step

  1. Under side control, keep your near elbow tight and wait for them to keep their head low on your near side instead of crossfacing you.
  2. Reach your near arm over the back of their neck so your arm wraps their head and the arm they have by your head.
  3. Bring your other hand up and clasp palm to palm, closing the loop around their neck and that arm, like an arm triangle from underneath.
  4. Curl your legs up and cross them, one ankle over the other shin, so your body folds into a tight ball and your elbows pin together.
  5. Finish slowly. Pull your elbows toward your chest and curl forward. The pressure goes into the sides of their neck, not the back of it. Release on the tap.

Details that make it work

  • Only take it when their head is on your near side. If they crossface you, recover guard instead.
  • Keep your elbows tight together. A loose loop turns it into a neck crank, not a choke.

Common mistakes

  • Yanking the head with your arms instead of curling your whole body.
  • Staying flat with straight legs, so the loop never tightens.

Drill it

Partner holds side control with the head on your near side. 8 reps each side to the locked ball, then 3 slow finishes with a partner you trust.
