Side control escape: frame & re-guard

The main side control escape: build frames, bridge, shrimp away, and put your knee back in. The goal is getting your guard back, not getting on top.

Side (bottom) Seated guard

The Easy Way to Learn Side Control Escape · JonThomasBJJ · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. Frames: near forearm in their neck or collarbone, far hand on their hip.
  2. Bridge into them to make them base, then shrimp your hips away.
  3. Slide your near knee into the space between you and them.
  4. Recover guard: closed, half, or open.

Details that make it work

  • Frames are bones, not muscles. Block, don't push.
  • Bridge first to move their weight, then shrimp away.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing with straight arms (it gives up the arm).
  • Lying flat.
