Butterfly (hook) sweep
The classic butterfly sweep: trap an arm, fall to that side, and lift with a hook. It works best when their weight is leaning forward onto you.
Step by step
- Sit up close, chest to chest, both feet hooked inside their thighs.
- Get an underhook on one side; with your other hand, trap their opposite arm at the triceps.
- Fall to the side of the arm you trapped, so they can't post with it.
- Lift with the hook on your underhook side, throwing their hips over.
- Follow them over, free your leg, and settle in mount or side control.
Details that make it work
- Trap the arm on the side you fall to. If they can post, the sweep fails.
- Get them leaning forward over you before you go.
Common mistakes
- Falling flat on your back instead of onto your side.
- Lifting with both hooks.
Drill it
10 each side, cooperative. Then positional: start in butterfly, sweep or get passed.
