Crucifix from turtle and the crucifix choke

You lock one arm with your legs and roll them onto you, then choke with the arm they can't defend. Use it when they turtle and leave space between their elbow and knee.

Crucifix to One-Handed Strangle: Take the Back from Turtle (BJJ No Gi) · Brian Glick · YouTube

Step by step

  1. From top turtle, sprawl on their back at one side, your chest across their upper back.
  2. Step one leg into the gap between their near elbow and knee.
  3. Lock their upper arm between your legs: cross your ankles or hook one foot over the other.
  4. Hold their far arm and roll over your shoulder toward their head, taking them with you. They land on their back on top of you, their near arm still locked in your legs.
  5. Extend your legs to stretch the trapped arm away. They now have one hand to defend.
  6. Slide your arm around their neck, elbow under the chin, grab your other biceps, put your free hand behind their head, and squeeze slowly until they tap.

Details that make it work

  • Lock the arm with your legs before you roll.
  • Keep the trapped arm stretched. A bent arm comes back to defend.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling before the arm is locked, so they turn into you.
  • Squeezing on the jaw. If the choke isn't under the chin, adjust or attack the far arm instead.
