Mounted Half guard

Intro to BJJ: Knee-Elbow Escape From Mount · Bellingham BJJ · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. Frame against their hip with your hands or elbows and turn onto your side.
  2. Shrimp your hips away to create space between their knee and your hip.
  3. Slide your bottom knee under their knee, to the inside.
  4. Trap their leg with your legs (half guard).
  5. Shrimp the other way and recover full guard.

Details that make it work

  • Elbow and knee together form a wedge.
  • Pair it with the upa: when they post to stop the upa, go elbow-knee.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing their chest with straight arms (armbar).
  • Shrimping without first turning onto your side.

Drill it

Solo: 20 shrimps. Partner: 10 each side.
