Mount defense: protect your neck and arms

How to survive mount: protect your arms and neck and keep them low while you set up your escape. Use it every time you're mounted, before trying the upa or elbow-knee.

Mounted Mounted

Mount Survival and Mount Elbow Escape (Jiu Jitsu Univ Ch 3 and 7-1) · BJJLibrary · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. Elbows tight to your ribs, hands high by your collarbones. Never push their chest with straight arms.
  2. Feet flat and close to your butt, so you can bridge any time.
  3. Keep them low: if they climb toward high mount, push their knees down toward your hips and bridge to slide them back.
  4. Chin down. If they push one of your arms across your face, pull it back to your ribs right away.
  5. Pick your escape: when they post a hand or ride high and light, upa. When they sit heavy and low, elbow-knee.

Details that make it work

  • Defend first, escape second. Your escapes only work if your arms and neck are safe.
  • Their posts tell you which escape to use.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing their chest with straight arms (armbar).
  • Lying flat with your legs straight, which takes away your bridge.

Drill it
