Inside position passing: hands and knees first

A passing approach where you win inside position with your hands and knees and pin the legs before you pass. Use it against flexible guards that recover every fast pass.

Passing Side control

Step by step

  1. Stand or kneel just out of reach with your elbows inside your knees and your hands near their knees.
  2. Win the hands. Break their grips on your wrists by circling your wrist toward their thumb. Put your hands inside, on their knees or the inside of their shins.
  3. Win the knees. Pummel your knee inside their foot or knee. Push their foot off your hip and down to the mat.
  4. Pin before you pass. Press both their knees to one side, or stick one shin to the mat, with your head over their hips.
  5. Pass from the pin with a knee cut, body lock or step around, and settle in side control.
  6. If they get a frame or foot back inside, return to step 2 instead of forcing the pass.

Details that make it work

  • Whoever has hands and knees inside controls the exchange. Win that before any pass.
  • Every pass starts from a pin. Moving around legs that are free just gives them time to recover.

Common mistakes

  • Diving into a pass while their feet are still on your hips.
  • Reaching with straight arms, so they grab your wrists and steer you.

Drill it

Positional rounds from open guard. 5 rounds of 2 minutes: you score only by getting both hands and one knee inside, then pinning for 3 seconds.
