North-south choke defense
Defense against the north-south choke: hands inside and get off your back. Use it whenever they walk around to north-south.
Step by step
- Prevent it: when they walk to north-south, keep your elbows tight and your hands at your neck. Don't reach around their back.
- If their arm slides under your neck, get a hand or forearm inside, between their arm and your throat.
- Bridge and walk your feet to turn your body, so you're on your side and out of line with them.
- Keep turning until you're at their side, then frame and escape side control.
- Tap when their arm is under your neck and they sink their weight with your hands still outside.
Details that make it work
- Hands inside before they sink their hips.
- Get off your back. Flat and square under them is where the choke works.
Common mistakes
- Pushing their head with a straight arm.
- Holding still and hoping the squeeze isn't tight.
