Omoplata from closed guard

You trap their arm with your legs and turn it behind their back to lock the shoulder. Use it when they pull an arm out of your triangle or post a hand on the mat.

Step by step

  1. Control one of their wrists and pin it to the mat by your hip.
  2. Put your foot on their hip on the side away from that arm. Hip out to angle your body away from the arm.
  3. Swing your leg on the trapped-arm side over their shoulder and across their back. Their arm is now trapped under your leg.
  4. Turn to face their legs. Figure-four your legs if you can, or cross your feet.
  5. Sit up, reach over their back and hold their far hip so they can't roll forward. Scoot your hips away to flatten them.
  6. Keep their wrist by your hip and lean your chest forward slowly until they tap.

Details that make it work

  • Hold their far hip. Without it, they forward roll out.
  • Flatten them first, finish second.

Common mistakes

  • Lying on your back after the leg swing, so they posture out.
  • Jerking forward on the finish.

Drill it

10 entries each side to the seated position, then 5 slow finishes each side.
