Peterson roll (sit-out) from turtle to leg entanglement

You trap the arm around your waist and roll them over you into a leg entanglement. Use it when you're turtled and they ride on your side.

Turtled Leg entangle

Move of the Week ➡️ Jiu Jitsu Peterson Roll · Shark Pit BJJ · YouTube · shown in the gi; the mechanics carry over

Step by step

  1. From turtle, with them on your side and their arm around your waist, trap that arm: clamp your arm over their elbow and grab their wrist.
  2. Slide your near leg inside their near thigh as a hook.
  3. Tuck your near shoulder and roll toward them, keeping the arm trapped. Your hook lifts their leg and they go over you.
  4. As they land, keep their near leg between yours and wrap it into ashi garami.
  5. Sit up and control their foot. Attack the straight ankle lock, or move to the saddle where allowed.

Details that make it work

  • Trap the arm before you roll, or they stay on top.
  • The hook does the lifting. The roll only works if their leg comes with you.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling over your neck instead of your shoulder.
  • Rolling away from them, which gives up your back.

Drill it

6 rolls each side from referee's position, ending in ashi garami.
