Trap & roll (upa)

Trap one arm and the same-side leg, then bridge and roll them off. It's the first mount escape most people learn and works best when they lean forward.

Step by step

  1. Trap one arm: grab their wrist and pin their elbow to your body.
  2. Trap the foot on the same side by stepping your foot over it.
  3. Bridge explosively up and over your opposite shoulder.
  4. Roll them toward the trapped side and land in their guard.

Details that make it work

  • Bridge up and diagonally over your shoulder, not straight up.
  • Trap the arm AND the leg on the same side, or they'll post.

Common mistakes

  • Bridging without trapping, so they just post.
  • Pushing their chest with straight arms.

Drill it

Solo: 20 bridges. Partner: 10 upas each side.
