Step by step

  1. Start in 50/50 with your outside leg over their thigh and your feet locked.
  2. When they turn away to hide their heel, turn with them. Keep your top leg over their hip and your knees pinched above their knee so the knee stays trapped.
  3. Hug their foot to your chest with their toes under your armpit. Slide the blade of your forearm behind their heel.
  4. Clasp your hands or grab your own wrist close to their heel. Keep your elbow tight to your ribs.
  5. Finish slowly. Turn your shoulders a few degrees, not just your arms, and stop the moment they tap.

Details that make it work

  • Control the knee line first. If their knee slips past your knees, the heel hook does not finish and they escape.
  • Heel hooks injure the knee before they hurt. Turn slowly and release on the tap.

Common mistakes

  • Grabbing the heel before the knee is trapped.
  • Cranking fast when they spin, which is how knees get hurt.

Drill it

From 50/50, partner turns away at 50 percent. 10 reps each side to the locked grip with no rotation. Finish only slowly, with a partner you trust.
