Step by step

  1. Sit up right away. Lying flat gives them your heel.
  2. Hand fight: both hands peel their grip off your heel. Keep your toes pointed and your foot turned.
  3. Break their triangle: use your free foot to push their locked feet apart, or push the top foot down off your hip.
  4. Pull your knee up and out until it clears their hip line.
  5. Free your foot, post on their top leg and come up to your knees or feet.
  6. Step back out of their legs and start passing. If the grip locks and your heel is caught, tap.

Details that make it work

  • The sequence is always hands, then triangle, then knee. Skipping a step gets you caught.
  • Your free leg is your best tool. Use it to open their feet.

Common mistakes

  • Turning or rolling against a locked heel hook. That's how knees get hurt.
  • Grabbing their leg to attack while your heel is still in their armpit.
