K-guard entry to the saddle (backside entanglement)

You thread one leg between theirs, invert under their lead leg and lock the saddle from underneath. Use it when they stand or kneel in front of your seated guard and give you their lead ankle.

Step by step

  1. Sit facing them with one leg threaded between their legs, behind their lead leg, your knee flared out. That's the K shape.
  2. Post your other foot on their hip or knee and grab their lead ankle with both hands, tight to your chest.
  3. Lean back and turn to your side, sliding your hips under their lead leg. Lift with the threaded leg to take their weight off it.
  4. Keep turning until the threaded leg crosses under them toward their far hip, and bring your other leg over the top of their lead thigh.
  5. Lock your feet on their far hip side and squeeze your knees. You're in the saddle. If they step back as you turn, settle in backside 50/50 instead.

Details that make it work

  • Control the ankle before you invert. If the foot slips out, you're just lying under them.
  • Turn under their leg with your hips, not your head. Your shoulders stay on the mat, your head stays out of the way.

Common mistakes

  • Inverting from too far away, so their knee never gets between your thighs.
  • Leaving your top foot loose, which lets them step over and pass.

Drill it
