Inside heel hook from the saddle

A heel hook from the saddle, the most common leg lock finish in modern no-gi. Use it only once the knee is pinned, finish slowly, and only where your rules allow it.

Finishing the Saddle Heel Hook - Aidan Woodhouse · London Grapple · YouTube

Step by step

  1. Start in the saddle with their knee pinned past your hip line and their far leg controlled.
  2. Hug their foot so their toes go under your armpit on the same side as their leg.
  3. Slide the blade of your forearm under their heel, heel in the crook of your arm, and lock your hands together.
  4. Pinch your knees and keep your hips tight so their knee can't turn.
  5. Learn the finishing direction from your coach in person, never from an app. Finish with a slow, small turn of your chest and shoulders. Stop the moment they tap.

Details that make it work

  • The heel sits on the bony edge of your wrist, not in your hand.
  • The finish comes from your torso turning a small amount, never from yanking with your arms.

Common mistakes

  • Cranking fast or at full range. The knee tears before it hurts.
  • Holding the heel with a loose grip so the heel slips and you chase it.

Drill it

Slow reps with a partner who taps early: 5 each side, grip and position only on the first 3.
