Technical stand-up

The safe way to stand up from the mat with your hands and head protected. Use it to get out of bad scrambles, to restart, or to start wrestling.

Seated guard Standing

BJJ Self Defense Lesson 4: The Technical Standup · Stephan Kesting · YouTube

Step by step

  1. Sit on one hip and post that same hand behind you; your other hand frames in front of your face.
  2. Plant the opposite foot flat on the mat.
  3. Lift your hips off the mat on the post hand and planted foot (a tripod).
  4. Swing your bottom leg back behind you, past your post hand, and land in a staggered stance.
  5. Stand with your head and hands up, out of range.

Details that make it work

  • The leg goes behind your post hand, not between your hands.
  • Use it every time you want to get out of a scramble and restart.

Common mistakes

  • Standing straight up into your partner, where you're easy to tackle.
  • Dropping the guard hand.
