Snap-down to front headlock
You pull their head down sharply so they drop to their hands and knees in front of you. It's the most reliable no-gi takedown for a beginner and leads straight into chokes and back takes.
Step by step
- Get a collar tie (hand behind their neck) and control their other wrist.
- Snap their head down toward their own knees as you step back.
- As they drop to a knee or their hands, sprawl your hips back so your weight lands on their head and shoulders.
- Lock the front headlock: one arm around the head with your forearm under the chin, other hand on their far elbow or triceps.
- Keep your hips low and back; circle toward the side of the arm you control.
Details that make it work
- The snap works best right after they lean or reach toward you.
- In the front headlock you control the head, and the body follows.
Common mistakes
- Snapping with only your arms instead of stepping back.
- Staying square in front of them, where they can re-shoot on your legs.
Drill it
