Stance, motion & hand fighting
The base of everything on the feet: how you stand, move and fight for grips. Get this right and they can't reach your legs, while your own attacks open up.
Step by step
- Staggered stance: feet about shoulder-width, lead foot slightly forward, knees bent, hips under your shoulders.
- Head up, eyes on their chest and hips, elbows tight to your ribs so nothing gets underhooked.
- Move in short steps and never cross your feet. Circle away from their strong hand.
- Win the hands first: clear their collar tie, take wrist control or a two-on-one before you attack.
- Change levels by bending your knees, not your back, every time you go for the legs.
Details that make it work
- Your posture is your defense. If your head drops below your hips, you're giving them a snap-down.
- Hand fighting is about being first: touch, clear, grip, attack, all within about a second.
Common mistakes
- Standing tall and square, which makes you easy to shoot on.
- Reaching for legs from too far away instead of closing distance with a tie-up first.
