X-guard entry and technical stand-up sweep

You slide under a standing opponent, hug one leg, and split their legs with an X of your feet. Use it when they stand up in your butterfly or De La Riva guard.

One of My Very Favourite Sweeps: Butterfly Guard to X Guard Standup! | Nonstop Jiu-Jitsu · Stephan Kesting · YouTube

Step by step

  1. From butterfly guard, when they stand up, lift with your hooks and slide your hips under them.
  2. Hug one of their legs with your arm, their knee tight to your shoulder.
  3. Put both feet on their other leg: one foot hooks behind their knee, the other foot pushes on the front of their hip. Your legs cross in an X.
  4. Extend your legs to split their legs apart while you keep hugging the near leg. They fall back to their seat.
  5. Keep the leg, post your free hand behind you, and do a technical stand-up.
  6. Stand with their leg in your arms and pass right away.

Details that make it work

  • Your shoulder stays tight to their knee. Space there lets them step over you.
  • Extend both legs at once, like opening scissors.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the leg too low, at the ankle, so they pull it free.
  • Lying flat and staying there after they fall, instead of standing up with the leg.

Drill it

Partner stands in your butterfly guard: 10 entries to X-guard, then 10 full sweeps with the stand-up.
