Double-leg defense: downblock and sprawl

How to stop a double leg: downblock, sprawl early and go to front headlock. Use it as soon as their level drops.

Standing Front headlock

Down Blocking to Defend The Double Leg by Zack Esposito · FANATIC WRESTLING · YouTube

Step by step

  1. Prevent it: stance low, hands in front, and watch their hips. Their level drops before they shoot.
  2. Downblock: as they shoot, put your hands on their head and shoulders to slow the shot.
  3. Sprawl right away: throw your legs back, drop your hips onto their shoulders and get your chest heavy on their back.
  4. Sprawl before their hands lock behind your knees. Late sprawls get finished.
  5. Circle to the side, keep their head down and settle into front headlock.

Details that make it work

  • Timing beats strength. Sprawl on the level change, not after the grip.
  • Hips down. Hips high means they can still drive through.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching around their back instead of blocking their head.
  • Sprawling with your legs but leaving your hips up.

Drill it

Partner shoots at 50%: 3 × 10 sprawls ending in front headlock.
