Single-leg defense: whizzer, hip pressure and limp leg

How to defend a single leg: whizzer, drive your hip in, then limp leg out. Use it whenever they grab one of your legs standing.

Standing Standing

Step by step

  1. Prevent it: stance low, hands in front, lead leg not left out to grab.
  2. When they grab the leg, whizzer: overhook their arm on that side deep, hand on their back, and drive your hip down into their shoulder.
  3. Push their head down and away with your free hand so they can't stand up into you.
  4. Limp leg: point your trapped foot at the mat, turn your hips away, and pull the leg out straight.
  5. Once it's free, square back up or snap their head down to front headlock.

Details that make it work

  • Hips in and heavy. A whizzer without hip pressure is just a hug.
  • Keep your trapped leg low. Once it's high in their hands, you're hopping.

Common mistakes

  • Hopping back on one leg with your hips square to them.
  • A shallow whizzer that leaves their head in your chest.

Drill it

Partner holds a single: 5 whizzer-and-limp-leg escapes each leg. Then 3 × 1 min single-leg game.
