Counter leg lock: clear the knee line into your own attack

You defend their leg entry, clear your knee and attack their leg in return. Use it the moment their entanglement loosens as your knee comes free.

Leg Lock Counter: How To Counter The Saddle to Your Own Inside Heel Hook (BULLET POINT BREAKDOWN) · PFed BJJ · YouTube

Step by step

  1. As they enter on your leg, sit up and fight their hands. Point your toes and turn your foot so the heel hides.
  2. Strip their grip off your heel with both hands before you do anything else.
  3. Clear the knee line: pull your knee out past their hips and turn it so your foot is away from their armpit.
  4. Put your free foot on their hip and scoot your hips toward theirs. Their legs are now loose around you.
  5. Grab the leg closest to your chest, pull it in and pummel your legs around it into your own ashi or 50/50.
  6. Hide your heel again, then attack: straight ankle lock, or a heel hook where allowed, finished slowly.

Details that make it work

  • Defense first, counter second. Never trade attacks while your heel is caught.
  • The counter works because their legs open when your knee comes free. Move in that moment.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for their foot while your knee is still trapped.
  • Rolling or spinning to escape a heel hook that's already locked.

Drill it
